Advice on buying a lawn mower?

I’ve never used a non-self-propelled lawn mower, but they are cheaper than the self-propelled ones and I am trying to save money. Would a gas-powered pull-start non-self-propelled lawn mower be too strenuous for a 50-year-old woman to use? What other things should I look for in a lawn mower? Our lawn is about 1500 square feet and very level.
